Phil Saviano’s abuse nightmare began before his 12th birthday (left, Saviano today at right). Father David Holley (inset above), a priest in his mid-30s with an impish sense of humor, was appointed to his church in Douglas, Mass.
The priest took an interest in young Phil — but it was only to groom him as a victim. Believing he was dying of AIDS years later, Saviano decided to forgo a five figure payout from the Catholic Church that would have forced him to keep silent. Saviano, now 63, provided the evidence to The Boston Globe, contributing to the Pulitzer Prize-winning series now the subject of the movie Spotlight, starring Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo.
